Bayliss: ‘A really good job is possible’
Three-time World Champion confident upon dramatic WorldSBK return.
Troy Bayliss grabbed much media attention in the Phillip Island pit lane on Thursday morning, with it having been announced the evening before that the three-time WorldSBK Champion is to cover for the injured Davide Giugliano this weekend.
“I think it’s caused a bit of talk and I’m really happy to be here,” Bayliss smiled. “I’m sorry for Davide. We all know how strong and fast he is and it’s a terrible way to start the year, that’s for sure.
“With the way it has worked out, being the 25th anniversary of WorldSBK at Phillip Island, when the opportunity arose I thought I should be here…not for me, but for the people and for Phillip Island. It’s a chance to come back and work with the people I used to work with. Hopefully we can have a good weekend and do a good result. You never know how it’s going to turn out, but I would love to have a good weekend.”
When quizzed over whether he can win a race, Bayliss responded:
“I think that’s a very big call. I would like to get a good result but it’s step-by-step, I’ve got to ease my way into it. If things start to come my way and I feel good on the bike, there is maybe a chance that I can do a really good job, but let’s just start with trying to do a good job!”
Currently not thinking about racing at Round 2 in Thailand, Bayliss concluded that he heads into Phillip Island with confidence as he looks to entertain his home crowd.
“Most of the Ducatis I have ridden feel like my lounge chair! I think we should be okay!” the 45-year-old laughed.
Troy Bayliss previously retired from WorldSBK as World Champion at the end of 2008, having wrapped up that year’s title on top of his previous championship wins of 2001 and 2006. Over his career, he started 152 races; from these he won 52, finished on the podium in 94, achieved 26 pole positions and 35 fastest race laps.
